City & Guilds Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE and represents a respected attainment as a cycle mechanic. The Level 2 Cycle Mechanic module was written by cycle industry experts and is designed to cover the following tasks for road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, BMX bikes and utility bikes.

What you'll learn:

  • Repair a cycle puncture

  • Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly

  • Carry out a systematic cycle check

  • Remove and replace cycle gear systems

  • Remove and replace cycle hub bearings

  • Remove and replace cycle bottom brackets and cranks

  • Build a cycle wheel

  • Prepare frames and forks for cycle assembly

  • Augment a cycle (fitting accessories)

  • Change a cycle frame

  • Service cycle headsets assemblies

  • Remove and replace cycle braking systems

Format

The course is taught in small groups of up to six trainees. Our mechanic trainers are all experienced in the retail bike industry and have teaching experience.

The courses last for 10 days and provides a significant foundation in cycle maintenance making it suitable for people working in bike retail outlets, bike recycling schemes, bike hire schemes and anyone wanting to fully maintain their own bikes.

Prior experience

It's ideal that you have a level of basic bike maintenance experience from either working on you own bicycles or those of friends. We'd expect trainees to understand how a bike works, what the various parts are called and how to use general tools.

If you only have a limited level of experience then it might be best to attanded one of our basic, intermediate or advanced one-day courses first.
