National Standards Instructor course
Our instructor courses last for 4 days and adhere to all the recommendations and principles of the National Standards for cycle training. We deliver courses at our Manchester base or can provide training for groups anywhere across the UK. All participants must be regular and competent cyclists, and will be assessed on their cycling ability during the course.
The initial 4 day course is a mixture of classroom-based learning and practical activities, to practise and show competence in each of the 3 levels of the National Standards. Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis. Participants who successfully complete this part of the course will receive a provisional pass towards full accreditation.
Course content:
- Detailed exploration of all 3 levels of the National Standards of cycle training
- Understanding of why people cycle and why training is important
- Types of bicycles
- Training ratios
- Effective teaching, discovery learning and group control
- Fitting of bikes and helmets
- Basic maintenance training
- Risk assessments and planning and preparing courses
- CRB checks and child protection
- Giving and receiving feedback
- Course manual and workbook
- All training materials
- A copy of Cyclecraft by John Franklin for each participant (recommended text for National Standards cycle training)
- Administration costs for full accreditation
- Individual action learning points
Post Course Assessment
The second stage of the course involves a period of post-course assessment, which must include an element of on-road training.
This must be completed within 6 months of completing the 4 day Instructor Training course and you are responsible for arranging this at a suitable time when you are actually delivering training.
Participants who have passed all of the assessment criteria during their monitoring will be verified as an Accredited Cycle Instructor, and their details held on our Cycle Instructor database. Certificates will only be issued once this PCA has been completed.
