Police Cycle Instruction Course
Police Pedal Cyclists
In response to the increase the number of officers on pedal cycles, BikeRight! in conjunction with Greater Manchester Police developed programme specific for the police trainers and pedal cyclists.
BikeRight!, an accredited training centre, delivers cycle training throughout the country. We train over 7000 adults and children every year at both national standard and Bikeability.
We run the course specific to training police officers to use pedal cycles. Working closely with Greater Manchester Police we have carefully incorporated national police procedures with the national standard for cycle training.
At present we offer two schemes which are:-
Training Trainers
Trainers undertake a two day course which teaches them the national standard outcomes for a cyclist riding on the road. The course will also cover the theory and practical side to teaching these outcomes to other police and pcso cyclists.
On completion of the course trainers will be qualified to train officers within their force, allowing all officers to cycle in accordance with the national standards.
The course also includes a pedal cycle assessors’ manual that uses specific police forms (- these may also be adapted to force specific forms).
This course was developed whilst working with Greater Manchester Police. We have trained over 50 trainers from this police force who have in turn trained over 250 officers within GMP. This standard ensures that everyone who rides a pedal cycle within GMP has been assessed and passed by a BikeRight! trained assessor.
Training Cyclists
For smaller forces we are available to train the Pedal Cyclists directly. This will involve two instructors delivering training for up to 12 cyclists at a time. This training is a direct way of getting all pedal cyclists up to national standards. Cyclists who are trained in this way cannot pass the training on to other cyclists.
All the instructors we use are fully trained national standard instructors.
Who we work with
Greater Manchester Police – We have trained over 50 trainers who have in turn trained over 250 police and pcso pedal cyclists.
Devon and Cornwall Police – We have trained 12 trainers who have trained over 100 pedal cyclists.
Cheshire Police – We are currently putting a programme together with Cheshire.
