BikeSwell - subsidised bicycle and training programme

The lack of a bicycle on which to develop skills and confidence is a barrier to regular cycling for work, study or leisure. By addressing or removing the most common barriers to cycling, BikeSwell schemes are a fantastic way to encourage a modal shift towards more sustainable, active travelling.

BikeSwell schemes provide a 'train before you buy' bicycle (for as little as £50) with the option of buying it at the end of a structured cycle training programme.  A small payment by an individual underpins ownership of the bike and reinforces buy-in to the training, resulting in lower levels of course cancellations and better engagement through all levels of the National Cycle Training Standards.

Our evidence shows that securing an up-front nominal payment and transferring ownership of the bike after the achievement of Level 2 Improver National Cycle Training has a dramatic increase in long-term cycling - much greater than just providing free training or a free bike.

What we offer

Following three successful BikeSwell pilot projects, BikeRight! now offer support to public authorities and organisations setting up and running subsidised bike packages.

BikeSwell can work in two ways:

  • With BikeRight! as a delivery partner, setting up and running the scheme on behalf of clients, utilising our own resources such as staff and equipment

  • Working with clients on a consultancy basis in setting up and running a scheme unique to the client, with BikeRight! in the background or at arms-length

BikeSwell offers a bespoke, structured programme of National Standards cycle training, planned to individual needs and provision of a subsidised hybrid bicycle with mudguards, pannier rack, lights, lock and a helmet.

How BikeSwell works

BikeRight!can develop or support a BikeSwell project plan tailored towards the needs of an organisation, project or area utilising significant experience in cycling development and leveraging relationships with partners, stakeholders and the supply chain.
