National Standards Cycle Instructor course for delivering Safe Urban Driving

This is a 5 day course and qualifies you to deliver the cycling element of a Vulnerable Road User Awareness Driver Training Course. (Safe Urban Driving)

The course is equivalent to a 4 day National Standards Instructor course plus 1 day CPD which orientates candidates to applying the National Standards to vulnerable road user awareness training.

The course focusses on the requirements of the National Cycle Training Standards and includes aspects for delivering FORS and JAUPT approved Safe Urban Driving. 

The course is available at our Manchester,Birmingham or Liverpool bases, or we can provide training for groups any where across the UK. All participants must be regular and competent cyclists, and will be assessed on their cycling ability during the course.

The course is a mixture of classroom-based learning and practical activities, to practise and show competence in each of the 3 levels of the National Cycle Training Standards and a thorough understanding of vulnerable road users. Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis.

Post Course Assessment and CPD training

A post course assessment must be completed within 6 months of completing the five-day Instructor Training course and you are responsible for arranging this at a suitable time when you are actually delivering training.

Prices start at £550 + VAT per person on an open course and from £3300 + VAT for a bespoke course with up to 6 trainees. PCAs are £150 per person.

FORS approved Safe Urban Driving CPD for existing National Standard Instructors

This is a 1 day FORS approved course which orientates existing NSI qualified cycle instructors to delivery of the cycling element of a vulnerable road user awareness training course for drivers.

Instructors attending this course MUST HAVE a National Standard Instructor qualification. The course can contribute towards necessary CPD for Cycling Instructors.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is for instructors to gain an understanding of how to make cycle training relevant and beneficial to drivers whilst undertaking a Safe Urban Driving course, shifting the focus of cycle training from a cyclists’ to a drivers’ perspective, in particular when assessing road risks.  The course will familiarise each instructor with the content ofthe Safe Urban Driving course and share knowledge and best practice to empower instructors to overcome trainee issues they are likely to encounter.  The course will also examine active travel and relevant and recent research and statistics important to work related road risk.

The instructors will take part in a practical teaching session delivering advanced cycle training outcomes in a way which is best suited to the on-road experience that drivers will gain from a Safe Urban Driving CPC course.
