Mountain bike skills loop – in a van!
Aimed at would-be Steve Peats or Rachel Athertons (2 of the UK’s leading mountain bikers) the BikeRight! mountain bike skills loop challenges riders to complete a full circuit over a range of tricky obstacles without dabbing (touching the ground with your foot or any other part of your body!) and makes a great addition to any event, party, sports day or show.
Our MTB skills loop obstacles are all portable and fit easily in to a van so we can set up the circuit in any suitable open space – a car park, sports hall, large garden, playing field or empty warehouse. Made from durable plywood with non-slip surfaces the skills loop can be as easy or hard as needed and can quickly be altered to suit any requirements.
The loop starts with the first of the slaloms, a tricky test of bike handling skill, which leads into the flat-top ramp – you can’t be tentative! Another slalom, each slalom gets tighter, leads onto the track-stand box. The rider coasts into the box and balances on the bike for 5 seconds (no dabs) then another short slalom leads to the skinny beam-cum-seesaw combo.
The trick with the skinny beam – 7 feet long and just 8 inches wide– is to look ahead, beyond the beam, not down at the beam itself. That way you’ll eliminate the wobbles that could see you exiting the skinny early! Once a rider has mastered the skinny they can then try the seesaw on the next lap.
No way! You’re having a laugh!! I’m not doing that!
The seesaw is undoubtedly the loop’s highlight. Riders invariably say they’re definitely not going to try it, but invariably they do! You must approach it with enough speed – and keep pedaling! When you get to the balance point the see starts to saw and you pick up speed as you run down and off. Once you’ve done it, you’re hooked, you’ll nip round to try it again, and again, and again.
The last obstacle provides the element of competition – the limbo bar. How low can you go? Each rider gets the chance to set the lowest bar height. The trick is to get every part of your body below the bike’s highest part – the handlebars –which is not as easy as it sounds!
