Freewheeling training dates for Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle City Council has teamed up with BikeRight! to offer free cycle training to anyone over 16 who lives, works or studies in the area.

To book your place just look through the dates below and click the link corresponding to your preferred option and required level of training, either Learn to Ride (L2R), Level 1 (L1), Level 2 (L2), or Level 3 (L3).

 

Midweek

  • Wed 6th Jun 10am-12noon L1/L2 (Nwc)

  • Wed 6th June 1-3pm L2R/L1 (Nwc)

Weekend

Level 3 courses

  • Level 3 one-to-one - midweek (Nwc)

  • Level 3 one-to-one - weekend (Nwc)

Eligibility

To be eligible for FREE training sessions you need to live, work or study in Newcastle and be aged over 16. 

If you don't live or work in one of these areas and still want to take part we make a charge of £50 per session. This fee can be paid in cash or cheque on the day of your training.

Our courses are based upon the National Standards for cycle training which are split in to 3 easy to understand levels each with clear aims and outcomes.

Cycle training Level 1  techniques and skills

  • Getting on and off
  • Starting off and stopping
  • Staying upright without wobbling

Cycle training Level 2 techniques and skills

  • Theory of on road cycling

  • Turning right, left and overtaking parked vehicles on a variety of quiet roads
  • Using cycling facilities

Cycle training Level 3 techniques and skills

  • On road theory as level 2 with additional theory as required to support the more advanced road work being undertaken
