Case study - Cheshire Police

Situation

Many police forces across the UK have pedal cycle patrol officers. The use of bicycles makes policing visible and bikes provide an ideal vehicle for use in city centre areas where speed of response and ease of access are a key to effective policing.

Until recently no formal cycle training of police officers took place in the UK and some accidents happened in a number of forces.

Cheshire Constabulary approached BikeRight! to plan and deliver appropriate cycle training.

Our solution

Working closely with the Cheshire Constabulary training department we assessed training requirements across both East and West Cheshire and focused on the main hubs of Macclesfield, Winsford and Chester.

The constabulary needed directly delivered training for the pedal cycle officers and PCSOs and in the short term there was no requirement for instructor training.

So far we have trained over 200 officers across the whole county and have a contract to continue the training for a further two years.

Benefits

• Cheshire Constabulary now have all of their cycle officers trained and competent to carry out duties involving cycle patrols

• Police officers can now patrol more effectively and with less risk to themselves and other road users

• Accidents involving police pedal cycle officers have decreased significantly due to the training

• Over 200 officers trained to date
