Case study - Assistant cycle training course
Situation
The Cycle Training Standards Board wanted to broaden the appeal of a career in cycle training and to attract more trainers. They asked BikeRight! to develop an Assistant Cycle Instructor course based on the main principles of National Standards for cycle training. The new course needed to have a wide appeal and be appropriate to under 18 year olds; individuals who wanted to deliver a certain level of cycle training on a part-time basis; people who were indirectly involved with cycling such as school teachers and police officers/PCSOs.
Our solution
We wrote a pilot course and were asked to deliver this to a group from Northampton Borough Council. Upon feedback during and after the course the content was reviewed and subsequently ratified by the CTSB as an accredited National Standards (NS) course.
The two day course is designed to take trainees up to the position where they can assist a fully qualified National Standards instructor in the delivery of Bikeability up to level 2. Once qualified as an assistant, a future transition course to become a fully trained cycle instructor can be taken.
This two day transition course when followed by a post course assessment (PCA) of real training will result in full NS instructor status.
Benefits
• Attendees gain a recognised cycle instructor qualification
• Those who pass the course can deliver up to level 2 Bikeability when working with a fully trained instructor
• A simple entry in to a career in cycle training with clear progression to full NS instructor status
