Case study - Sellafield cycle training
Situation
Like many companies, Sellafield Limited found that as their workforce grew they became increasingly constrained by the limited capacity offered by the site car park. After completing a company travel plan, Sellafield Limited decided to encourage cycling throughout the staff in a responsible and holistic fashion.
The aim was to encourage cycling for both commuting and during work time for travel between local sites in Warrington.
Due to the use of bicycles for work, health and safety regulations and Sellafield’s own desire to keep staff safe led them to our doors. They asked us to put together a bespoke cycle training package for 8 of their employees who had expressed a preference for cycling instead of car use.
Our solution
BikeRight! worked with the area’s travel coordinator and developed a strategic approach which delivered an increased workforce propensity to cycle as a commuter choice and encourage use of their bikes during work time for short journeys.
To date, BikeRight! has trained 12 individuals from Sellafield to Level 3 National Standard and also delivered a bike maintenance course.
Benefits
• Increase in the number of journeys by Sellafield staff conducted by bicycle
• A number of car parking spaces have been freed up
• Employees participating in the scheme have seen an improvement in their health and well-being
• Positive PR and CSR messages have been generated as a result of the initiative

"The simple rules we were shown on the cycle training scheme were a revelation. The benefits are so obvious. The practical sessions helped reinforce the theory - and because we were a small group on a real road, were able to see the effect of good and ‘not so good’ practice.
So, a worthwhile session. Thanks must be given"
