Case study - Cornwall Festival of Cycling
Situation
Cornwall County Council has run the Cornwall Festival of Cycling for the past 6 years. Each year the event grows and attracts more and more interest from the public and local schools. The event takes place in late June/early July each year with a mix of in-school Bikeability training and three public roadshows over consecutive weekends in Falmouth, Penzance and Truro.
Our solution
In partnership with Pennine Events we put together a fun and varied programme for schools and the public.
Bikeability training was delivered over the first two weeks of the festival with school roadshows on the Fridays of each week. The third week saw roadshows in five different primary schools across West Cornwall. Each Saturday we held Public Roadshows in Penzance, Truro and Falmouth.
The bikeability training involved pupils in two secondary schools being trained to Level 2, and the whole of their Year 7 pupil groups taking part in the roadshows. 30 children in two primary schools were trained to Bikeability Level 1. At the roadshows, in both secondary and primary schools, a total of nearly 800 pupils had the opportunity to try out various types of bikes including KMX karts. We were also able to offer a trike for some disabled children, enabling them to take part alongside their peers.
The public roadshows again had different types of bikes to try out, including the trike, KMX karts and a tandem. These were all extremely useful, again enabling a number of disabled children to have a go. We also offered advice to visitors, for example, on types of bikes and training available. The roadshows also saw specialist cyclists demonstrating uni-cycles, penny farthings - we even had a cycling police clown!
