Case study - St Philips CofE school event
Situation
Bikeability cycle training at St Philips CofE school had been delivered on many previous occasions by our Warrington team of instructors. The local Church wanted to run a one day cycling event at the school that would appeal not just to the pupils but also the wider community, including families, parents and other local children.
Our solution
The event centred on the school’s playgrounds. We conducted a risk assessment a week beforehand and again on set-up day. We assisted the church and school on promotion of the event to the community.
Throughout the day level 1 Bikeability was delivered to year 4 children and younger. Helmets were also provided by BikeRight! to all children in order that nobody missed out on the fun. Explanations and methods of teaching were later provided to allow parents to see how the benefits and outcomes have changed since their own experience of the Cycling Proficiency test.
Within the space visitors were able to make use of a Dr. Bike facility: to see for themselves and have explained any minor repairs or adjustments to either adult or children’s bicycles.
One very popular activity across all age groups featured bike tryouts: BMX, mountain bikes, scooters and KMX carts could be ridden within a specially designed and challenging track.
As well as being able to use a variety of equipment we opened up a dialogue with the children and adults about the benefits of cycling to health, wellbeing and sustainability and discussed suitability of different bikes via a brief commentary narrative whilst they took part.
Benefits
• Opportunity to promote cycling as a healthy choice of activity
• Level 1 training delivered to younger children than would otherwise be the case
• A successful event to put in people’s diaries for years to come
• Extra money raised to support the church
